Get Hired and Find a Job Faster
Most of us all have email these days. Most of us have cell phones too. However, there are certain folks we want to be able to reach out and touch us whenever they want to. While you are in an interview, at work or in the shower that may not always be possible. So let's say you are on the road away from your laptop in an interview and a new urgent email comes in from your first and best choice for future employment.
Naturally, this email is an urgent and time sensitive notice of a first or second interview. Instead of getting it and responding instantly, you will not be able to do either for at least a couple of hours. Your perspective employer will still be getting responses from other likely candidates until his allotted time is filled up.
Now you can still be in the running, like never before with this sweet strategy: Use the automated vacation responder in your email to send out a prompt reply for you instead. Like this:
Subject: Thank you for emailing me!
I will get back to you as promptly as possible. At the moment I am currently unavailable due to work.
However, I can most likely be reached by cell phone as I am on the road today. Please do call me ASAP for any time sensitive matters. As you know I am in the customer service business, and we are committed to making sure you are happy. So do give me a call at 555-555-5555. Thanks, Sam Mason, Massive Promotions Inc.
To set this up if you have Gmail: Click on settings menu, then find the general tab and click on that. Scroll down till you see a choice for: Vacation Responder and click Vacation Responder On. Now below this fill in the subject line & then complete the message below the subject line by simply typing instructions you want your prospective interviewers to get. Something similar to the above example may work just fine for you or you may have something better in mind. (Don't forget to turn this feature off when you come home.)
I would only suggest using this when you are expecting some interview invitations or congratulations you are hired news. Often times it comes via email these days for various reasons. Chief among them is a busy manager can be conducting business by phone and still sending out emails at the same time. Multitasking is a must in today's brave new world. Realistically, you could wind up playing second fiddle if you miss one of these emails and are unable to reply in time. The courtesy automatic response may be just the ticket you need to get a phone call instead directly from the big cheese. Just as likely they will simply wait for you or hold a time slot open for you as a result of your great communication skills.
Naturally, you could get a Blackberry or an iPhone to do something similar, but those are likely to set you back at least $120/month for a service contract if not more. That contract does not usually include the full cost of the phone either. Google's Gmail service also happens to excel in other areas which can be of service to job hunters and busy folks in general. The spam filter is superb, far better than any other I have experienced. Since time is money this is great for everybody.
Google's Gmail has storage capacity that is exceptionally large also. This is really handy when you need to look for an old email as it will be there. Did I mention it is free? Using this trick to handle urgent communications you may be able to avoid the purchase of a cell phone altogether. But most importantly, you can get hired. If you have a great get hired tip tell me about it by sending me a comment or suggestion.
